Farewell, 5th Graders!

Drew was so lucky to have our 5th graders leading the school this year.  We will certainly miss them and wish them the best.

In recognition of their success and contributions, your Drew PTA and a committee of 5th grade teachers and parents teamed up to continue the exciting 5th grade end-of-year party tradition.  Together with a substantial fundraising effort by teachers and parents and a PTA sponsorship, the kids were treated to an exciting 3-hour fun fest featuring music, pizza, snacks, refreshments, Kona Ice, a photo booth, and an inflatable obstacle course.

We bid our graduating 5th graders a bittersweet farewell! You were amazing students and even better kids! Thank you for helping to make Drew a fantastic school. We hope your journey into middle school and beyond is as successful as the one you've experienced here with us! And remember: once a Dolphin, always a Dolphin! Visit often!

MCCPTA Awards Ceremony

The Montgomery County Council of PTAs closed out its year of meetings with its final Delegates Assembly and MCCPTA awards celebration on Tuesday, May 23, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Robert Frost Middle School. President Benito San Miguel attended the event. Awards were given to administrators, educators, and volunteers. Some of the honorees included a Lifetime Achievement Award, Teacher of the Year, and Principal of the Year. Your Drew PTA nominated Mrs. Means-Harris for Principal of the Year. There was some stiff competition, and, while Mrs. Means Harris ultimately did not receive the award, we congratulate and acknowledge her for her tireless contributions to making Drew such an awesome place to learn and grow.

FLES Wraps Up

The Foreign Language in Elementary School (FLES) program classes in French and Spanish hosted their final sessions and held an open house for parents on May 15. The classes were offered by Big Learning, a non-profit enrichment before- and after-school program organization founded by the Montgomery County Council of PTAs (MCCPTA) in 1975. We've been delighted to coordinate its return after a few-year hiatus and look forward to teaming up again to offer foreign language opportunities in the future.

Appreciation All Around – Staff Appreciation Week

In addition to myriad volunteers that pitch in at our PTA functions, many families also contribute generously in kind. Our staff and PTA board truly appreciated the food donations this week, including the nearly two dozen pizzas from Ledo Pizza in Wheaton owned and managed by Mr. Jigar Sheth. Our amazing donors contributed ingredients, desserts, refreshments, and ready-made meals.

Special thanks are due to our loyal parent volunteers, particularly Mrs. Susan Milner (Staff Appreciation chair), Ms. Kris Allen, Mrs. Vicky Christos, Mrs. Consuelo Goodwin, and Mrs. Elizabeth Camacho. They dedicated resources and time to ensure that our staff felt appreciated. And our staff showed their gratitude with a deluge of signed thank-you cards and kind words.

Here are some shots from the staff breakfast on Monday:

Dolphins Dancing

Scores of anxious Dolphins poured through our doors Friday evening for a final peek at the book fair, but they were also treated to our thrilling 3rd Annual Dolphin Dance! Our returning crowd-favorite DJ, Danny Kramer, filled the All-Purpose Room with color and sound as the student body showed off its moves. The dance has become such a popular staple over the past 3 years that even alumni and parents get in on the fun!

Thanks to all the volunteers that helped with refreshments and games. Our teamwork kept our kids entertained until the last minute, and only the DJ's final beats reminded all our talented dancers that it was past their bedtimes!

Check out a few of the pics from such a fun-filled night:

Spring BOGO Book Fair Recap

Our Spring BOGO Book Fair fared wonderfully!  Gross sales were $6,617.41, which surpassed last spring's BOGO sales of $6,064.89 by a substantial margin!  Proceeds go towards books for the Media Center and classrooms.

We couldn't have done this without our fantastic, hardworking volunteers.  More and more parents are stepping up year after year, which not only makes the fair's operation much more manageable, but also makes setup and breakdown a breeze.  Thank you all so much for your support.

Here are some photos from the April 20-28 stretch:

BOGO Book Fair – April 24 to April 28, 2017

Our annual Buy-One-Get-One Spring Book Fair is coming to the Media Center the week of April 24-28!  Daily hours are from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. every day.  We will host evening hours from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 28, for parents to join their children at the fair!  The fair will be open that evening during our 3rd annual Dolphin Dance in the all-purpose room.

Note: Outside visitors to the book fair are not allowed during the school day.  Please encourage your children to bring home wish lists after their class's preview and send the right amount of money with them when they return for purchases.  You can also take advantage of the Friday evening hours to shop with your child.  Thank you for your cooperation!

We are recruiting volunteers to help make our fair a success!  Please sign up here!  It takes a village!
